Can laser hair removal make hair worse or cause more hair to grow?

Yes. Paradoxical hypertrichosis (also called paradoxical hair stimulation) is a documented side effect of laser hair removal where the treatment actually triggers new hair growth rather than eliminating it. It is more common than most providers acknowledge.

It happens most often on the face and neck — particularly the cheeks, jawline, chin, and upper neck. The leading theory is that sub-therapeutic laser energy (not quite strong enough to destroy the follicle) stimulates dormant or fine vellus follicles in the surrounding area, causing them to activate and produce thicker, darker, more visible hair. It tends to occur more in people with hormonal sensitivities, finer or lighter facial hair, and medium to olive skin tones.

Electrolysis can permanently resolve paradoxical hypertrichosis. Because electrolysis targets each follicle individually and does not rely on heat energy that can scatter to neighboring follicles, it stops the triggered growth at its source. Every follicle treated — whether original or laser-stimulated — is permanently destroyed.

If laser made your hair situation worse, please stop additional laser treatments on the affected area and book a consultation at Bare Hair Electrolysis in Riverton, Utah. This is completely fixable.
