Hair & Skin Type

Is electrolysis safe for dark skin tones?

Yes. Electrolysis is completely safe and equally effective on every skin tone, including deep and darker skin tones. This is a significant advantage over laser hair removal.

Laser targets the pigment contrast between dark hair and light skin. On darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI), the laser energy is absorbed by skin melanin as well as hair melanin, which creates a real risk of burns, blistering, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots). Many laser providers require lighter skin tones or use less aggressive settings on darker skin — reducing effectiveness and still carrying risk.

Electrolysis delivers electrical current directly to the follicle via a probe inserted alongside the hair. It does not interact with skin pigment at all. The mechanism is the same regardless of skin tone, the results are identical, and there is no increased risk.

At Bare Hair Electrolysis in Riverton, Utah, skin tone never affects candidacy or results. Everyone receives the same permanent, effective treatment.
