I get asked this question almost every day:
“Does electrolysis hurt?”
So let me answer you honestly, the same way I would in person.
You Will Feel Something
I’m not going to tell you it’s completely sensation free. But it is completely manageable for most people.
The probe insertion itself is painless, since it doesn't puncture the skin, and slides into the follicle's natural opening. However, with each hair I treat, you’ll feel a quick localized zap - usually a burst of heat or a prickling sensation.
Most people’s reaction is:
- “oh, that’s not bad”
- “I expected worse”
- “it’s kind of weird, but totally manageable”
It Really Depends on You
This is the most important part, and I always tell my clients this:
Everyone experiences and feels things differently.
I have some clients who literally fall asleep during their appointments…
and I have others who are just more sensitive.
Both are completely normal.
It really comes down to your personal sensitivity level, the area we’re working on, and even how you’re feeling that day.
My Honest Take
I personally have a pretty high pain tolerance so electrolysis doesn’t bother me.
That doesn’t mean you’ll feel exactly the same, but it gives you a reference point from someone who does this all day.
Some Areas Are More Sensitive
The upper lip tends to be the most noticeable for people because it’s just a more sensitive area.
Chin, neck, and jawline are typically very manageable.
Body areas like arms or legs are often even easier.
The First Time Feels Different
Your first appointment might feel a little more intense, because it’s new.
Once you know what to expect, most people relax a lot, and it feels much easier moving forward.
A Few Simple Ways to Make It Easier
- Take ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before your appointment
- Apply topical numbing to the area being treated
- Avoid caffeine beforehand as it can make you more sensitive
- Drink plenty of water – your skin responds better when it’s hydrated
The Bottom Line
Electrolysis isn’t completely painless, but it is totally tolerable for most people.
And it’s the only method that’s actually permanent.
If you’ve been dealing with the same hairs over and over again, this is what finally puts an end to that cycle.
If you’re unsure, we can always start slow, do a short session, and go from there.
You don’t have to guess – you’ll know pretty quickly how it feels for you.
