Gender-Affirming Care

Why is hair removal required before gender-affirming surgery?

Hair removal before gender-affirming surgeries — including vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, and related procedures — is required because surgical sites are created using donor skin from areas that typically have hair. Without pre-surgical hair removal, hair follicles in that donor tissue will continue growing hair inside the surgical site after healing, which can cause serious complications including infection, cysts, and functional problems.

Electrolysis is the standard recommendation for pre-surgical hair removal because it is the only method that permanently destroys the follicle. Laser can reduce hair but cannot guarantee complete, permanent follicle destruction — and surgical teams typically require confirmed permanent removal, not just reduction. Starting early matters: most surgical teams want several months of cleared growth before the procedure.

The areas treated depend on the specific surgery and your surgeon's requirements. Your surgical team will provide a map of the donor area that needs clearance. At Bare Hair Electrolysis in Riverton, Utah, we work with your surgical timeline and can provide documentation of treatment progress if your team needs it.

If you are working toward surgery, the best time to start electrolysis is now. The earlier you begin, the more flexibility you have in your surgical timeline.
